THE IMPORTANCE OF RECOGNITION

March 2, 2010

This past Sunday, the Freestyle Fighting Academy and Women Only Fitness Bootcamp held their 6th Annual Awards & Celebration Banquet for their staff and students, and their families and friends.  The venue of choice was the exquisite Signature Gardens.  The appointed salon was elegant as usual.  The lights were appropriately dim; the tables were beautifully set with red wine and flowers, and Kenny G was the favorite to set the final touch on the perfect ambience.

This formal event aims to honor the achievements and hard work of the students throughout the past year.  Categories such as “Most Dedicated” and “Rookie of the Year” are among the titles of awards handed out to their deserving athletes.

However, this ceremony is more than just handing out trophies.  As the names of the winners are called out and they are invited to the podium to accept their prize in the presence of hundreds of people, something magical happens – something intangible yet priceless.  Those few seconds that we are in the spotlight are like sunlight to the human spirit.  We feel immortal; larger than life.  That feeling of recognition is like chicken soup for the soul…it is necessary to motivate us to be better, and on a deeper level, to help us grow.  Humans need to be recognized.  They need others to recognize their significance in the world.

So what are you waiting for, get out there and thank someone.  Show your appreciation for your fellow human.

Best regards,

Did you know it takes your brain about 20 minutes to figure out that you are full?

March 1, 2010

So if you are inhaling your meals in less than 20 minutes, you may be over-consuming calories your body has no physical need for.  Slow down your meal time by eating slower before determining whether you are full.  Drink enough water with your meal and engage in conversation so your brain has a chance to register that you are full.  You may find that you don’t have to eat nearly as much to be satisfied.  After all, controlling your portions is one of the keys to successful weight loss.
Also, you can shave about 100 calories by not adding butter or mayonaise to your sandwich, 140 calories by skipping the regular soda and a whopping 300 calories by choosing a hamburger instead of a “Big Mac”! (and of course, that’s only on your cheat days!)  Over time this equals big weight loss.  Small changes mean big results!

Resistance is key!

February 25, 2010

To affect muscle versus fat ratios you MUST weight train or work out with resistance, such as your body weight.  Contrary to common belief, bodybuilders don’t spend their entire day lifting in the gym.  Most bodybuilders are aware that after about 45 to 60 minutes, catabolic (muscle wasting) hormones begin to wreak havoc.  An intense weight workout lasting no more than 60 minutes is the most efficient route to go.  You don’t have to workout with a “bodybuilding routine”, but you should work the entire body approximately three alternate days per week.  (BOOTCAMP!!!)

The more lean muscle mass you carry, the higher your metabolic rate is, and this means you burn more calories …even at rest!  It’s like comparing a 4-cylinder car to an 8- or 12-cylinder one.  The more powerful cars guzzle more gas because they need more energy....if you had more muscle, your body would need more energy to sustain itself, therefore more calorie-burning! (Just so you know, pound per pound, muscle burns 4-5 times more calories than fat!)

Also contrary to popular belief, women will NOT get huge if they workout with weights!  That is a common myth, but it’s very unfortunate since it limits many women from achieving that toned look they so desire!  So ladies, start lifting or get on those military-style push ups!

We got SIX Banquet Tickets left over – call FFA if you want in!

February 25, 2010

Hey everybody, the Banquet is almost here!  The FFA Annual Awards Banquet is taking place this Sunday at the elegant Signature Gardens in Miami.  Students from both our Miami and Broward MMA gyms are invited!

The deadline to register was yesterday but since we always have some late birds, I had reserved 10 extra seats just in case.  From the extra 10 seats, four have already been claimed… we are left with 6 seats!

If you want to pick up one of the seats, go to www.FFAspace.com and reserve the seats online on the front page.  Once I get the six seats filled, I will take down the online reservation form from the website… so in other words, if you see it there, you can still reserve a seat :)

This is the MOST IMPORTANT EVENT of the year for Freestyle Fighting Academy and Women-Only Fitness Bootcamp… we are inviting everyone from our kids, teens, adult MMA, adult CAP, Bootcamp, and friends and family to attend!  These six seats will vanish fast, so if you want in reserve them!

Take a look at the video above to see last year’s banquet and check out how nice of an event this really is!
