New Year’s Resolution?

December 31, 2009

Hello everyone!!!

As I type up this last post of the year, I want to wish each and every one of you a very happy and prosperous 2010. And by that, I mean that I hope that you all find the strength & will to set life-improving goals and follow them diligently throughout the year!

In all honesty, I am not a big fan of the New Year’s resolution thing… I mean how often are people faithful to them? There is a crazy statistic that 80% of people break their resolution after only one day! If something needs changing or improving in your life, why wait?? Aren’t you important enough to ACT NOW! Not to sound like a pessimist, but the “New Year’s resolution” idea encourages procrastination….it’s an excuse to delay action!
(We find enough excuses in our day to day lives – we don’t need another!)

If you feel you need to lose weight, DO IT NOW!
If you feel you need to exercise more, DO IT NOW!
If you need to quit a bad habit, why not DO IT NOW!!? Why is January 1st so different from any other day and why is it dictating your behavior!???

Don’t let your mind get in the habit of delaying what needs to be done! Change that mental ‘programming’ and you will notice just how productive and how much happier you are! I promise you that!

On that note, enjoy 2010!!!

Best Regards,

HARD WORK WILL ALWAYS PAY OFF!

December 29, 2009

Some of you are back to the work grind, but only for a few days until we break again to ring in the celebration of a new year!

If you know of someone who’s been wanting to try out Miami’s #1 fitness & nutrition bootcamp, forward them this email and tell them about our 1 WEEK FREE TRIAL!

WHY WOMEN ONLY FITNESS BOOTCAMP???

The best way to lose weight is really quite simple. There are 2 requirements:
1. Cut back on calories.
2. Follow a program that combines healthy eating, aerobic exercise, and strength training.

This is a proven way to lose weight, and keep it off permanently!

You may be wondering…. “Well if cutting back on calories and following a program that combines healthy eating, aerobic exercise, and strength training are so effective, why don’t more people follow this type of program?” It’s because there are so many weight loss products and “quick-fix” solutions on the market that are advertised as being fast and easy – and well, unfortunately ‘fast and easy’ sells.

If there was such a thing as fast and easy weight loss, there wouldn’t be so many overweight people. “The World Health Organization reports that more than one billion adults are overweight, and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese. In the United States alone, over 60% of adults are overweight or obese!!!”

Year after year, billions of dollars are being spent on weight loss products and solutions, but people keep gaining weight. Why? Because those so-called ‘solutions’ don’t work! Plain and simple!
Reducing your daily caloric intake and following an exercise program require effort, dedication and determination. Most people aren’t willing to commit – they aren’t in it for the long haul,
but it truly is the best way to lose weight and the only way to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Next, think FAT loss, not weight loss.
What really matters is not what the scale reads, but how much fat you can pinch!
Conventional diets, especially low carbohydrate diets, focus on scale weight and pounds.
There are many diet ads saying things like “lose 30 pounds in 30 days,” or “lose 8 to 15 pounds your first two weeks.”
It sounds great, but it’s impossible to lose 8-15 pounds of body fat in two weeks. If you do lose that much weight, you’re most likely losing a few pounds of fat, several pounds of muscle,
and a lot of water. Your goal has to be to lose fat while maintaining muscle. Realistically, you want to aim at reducing your weight by 1-2 lbs per week.

Keep in mind, most diets are based on a drastic reduction of calories. Starvation diets do not work!!
95% of the people who go on a “diet” gain all of their weight back, and they sometimes end up heavier than when they started.
You can lose weight quickly by drastically reducing calories, but the weight loss will primarily be water weight. Drastically reducing calories also forces your body into “starvation mode.” Once your body is in starvation mode, your metabolism slows down and fat loss stops.
You definitely have to cut back on calories in order to lose fat, but you should never reduce your calories to less than 1200 calories a day.

Ladies, slow and steady is the way to go!
The healthiest and safest way to lose fat is by a gradual process. This will also most likely result in permanently keeping the fat off. Your goal should be to lose about 2 pounds of fat per week. This is the recommendation of almost every legitimate and respected dietician, nutritionist, exercise physiologist, and personal trainer.

In conclusion, the best way to lose weight (fat) is not complicated. By cutting back on calories and following a program that combines healthy eating, aerobic exercise, and strength training, you’ll be able to accomplish any weight loss goal….AND THAT IS WHAT WOMEN ONLY FITNESS BOOTCAMP IS ALL ABOUT!!!

Best wishes for a great new year!

What Makes Sherlock Holmes A Great Detective?

December 28, 2009

I went to watch Sherlock Holmes today, and as I observed the fascinating tale of the incredible detective, it made me think about a key aspect greatness. It is the thing that seperates the awesome from the meek, the gold medal from the silver. It is so often overlooked, because it is small.

What is it? It is the small things, the little details that make all the difference. In Sherlock’s case, he is able to pick up on the pieces or evidence that everyone else overlooks. Just a small hair is enough to break the whole case. That little detail makes him the top detective.

This doesn’t just apply to fiction, real life follows the same rules. A study was done on race horses that tracked horses times and winnings. The result, the top horse won over 10 times the winnings of the average horse, while running only 3% faster! 3% percent is the little things, the extra attention to details.

So be like Sherlock Holmes. Give your customers the extra attention and courtesy that others do not. Go the extra mile. Look around and see what you can do that others are not doing, then do it! You will surprise yourself on how big a difference little details make.

If you were to interview every great mixed martial arts champion, I’m sure there would be little details that give them that extra 3% that separates them from the rest of the contenders! With MMA and everything else in life, the little things count!

NO EXCUSES!!!

December 27, 2009

Ok, rather than “NO EXCUSES”, I should use the title “DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR RESULTS!”

When I say, “no excuses”, the first thing that you think of are excuses… so let’s focus on what we want, which is RESULTS…

Along the journey to getting results, there are many obstacles. Usually, the better the results we want, the more obstacles that will present themselves on the way there… and unfortunately, our instincts tend to guide us away from our desired goals by allowing these obstacles to derail us. How do these obstacles usually derail us? They usually come in the form of “excuses”.

99.9% of the population uses excuses on a daily basis – but most don’t think of them as excuses… they think of them as “reasons” they couldn’t accomplish things. There is this misconception that the term “excuses” only apply when the excuses aren’t valid reasons… for example, if you are late to work and tell your boss the reason you didn’t come in time is because your dog was sick… people will consider that an “excuse”… but if you are late to work because someone stole your car, that wouldn’t be labeled an “excuse” but rather, “the reason I was late to work…” but the reality is that they are both one and the same – that is nothing but an excuse… you should have gotten a friend to pick you up or gotten a cab.

To paraphrase Dan Kennedy, the fact is that people prefer good excuses to good results any day of the week. That sounds crazy but its true – because to get good results, requires exceptional work. Most people have never gotten “good” results – rather just results. The truly “good” results are usually not achieved because along the way, the good excuses came around, which are preferred, and people who cling on to them.

For instance, Mr. Tulio Quintanilla and I have a video instructional series we started working on last month, and we had set a deadline of having it filmed and edited before the end of the year… well, Mr. Tulio had filmed the entire thing with our professional $3,500 camera and we were planning on capturing the video to the computer and editing it this week… but then a surprise disaster struck… the camera’s DV port (the port that connects the camera to the computer) got burned out… after talking to Canon’s tech support, it turns out it isn’t a big deal, it is easily replaceable… but it has to be MAILED to Canon in New Jersey… which means there would be ZERO chance of us finishing the editing by January 1!

See, we filmed the entire thing… we just haven’t captured the video to the computer for the editing… which would only take a day or two between Mr. Tulio and I… so basically, we did all the HARD work already, which was filming the instructional…

It is VERY tempting for us to say to each other, “You know what, we did the hard part, let’s go ahead and send the camera for repair and it should be back by January 10, then we can capture the video and have it all done by January 14, only missing our deadline by two weeks…”

Instead, Mr. Tulio told me, “Master Marcos, we NEED to get this done, where can we find another camera?! I don’t care what we got to do, we need to get this done!”

It was the proudest I have ever been of Mr. Tulio! Well, I did my end of the legwork and went on Craigslist and found another professional camera, a $2,000 camera, and I found it used for $600! It was a great deal that took me some hours to find and negotiate… then I had to drive to Jupiter to pick it up today. Our plan is that once we are done using the camera to capture the video, we’ll put it back up on ebay or craigslist and sell it for $800 – hopefully flipping it for a 33% profit :)

So now I got a replacement camera – but the tapes in our other camera won’t play on this one! The other camera was a HD camera of higher quality… although this new one is a professional camera, it isn’t of the same HD quality of our previous one… in other words, we are going to have to re-film the entire instructional series all over again.

Tomorrow, at 12PM, Mr. Tulio and I are set to re-shoot the entire instructional. We are giving ourselves all day Monday and Tuesday to do this… then on Wednesday and Thursday we are going to do all the editing and FINISH this project before the New Year – AS WE SAID WE WOULD.

I know we aren’t in the clear either, I’m sure there will be a few more hurdles in the way, but we are going to run over them and get to our goals! That is the point, NO EXCUSES – ALL RESULTS. Don’t let yourself get stopped by a “good reason”, rather do the extra work required to get the needed results. Prefer the results over the excuses!

Another recent example I’ve seen of this is with UFC fighter Tom Lawlor. Tom is from Jungle MMA in Orlando, Florida. He recently has stopped by FFA to train for a week or so in preparation for his upcoming UFC fight on January 11 versus Aaron Simpson.

The reason I bring up Tom is because this guy is ALL RESULTS kind of guy… this Christmas holiday, his partners in Orlando were celebrating with their families… so on Christmas Day, Tom drove down 4 hours to Miami to do a MMA sparring session with us… then the next day, woke up and did hill sprints with the team and drove back another four hours to Orlando and did an evening training session the same day! THAT IS NO EXCUSES!

Tom could have used the whole “Christmas” excuse (which a lot of my fighters did) and he could have used the whole “I just drove four hours” excuse… but he didn’t! Furthermore, on Saturday, he did the hill sprints in the morning, which are VICIOUS, and then drove four hours… he could have easily said to himself, “I’m tired from driving four hours yesterday and today… plus I already had a great workout in the morning… that is good enough, I should rest tonight…” BUT HE DIDN’T. That is why Tom is in the UFC and winning fights – and I’m confident that his hardwork will show on January 11.

Think about this as the New Year is coming up… 2010 is a new year and a new decade – time to get all those results you want! Stop looking for excuses – start looking at what needs to be done to get the results. As Nike said, “Just do it!”

Three Simple Ways To Inspire Yourself

December 26, 2009

A big part of training mixed martial arts (MMA) and UFC style training is being motivated! We all have moments where we are very motivated and eager to tackle the day. But just as quick as the spirit of power entered you, it left you. How can we stay motivated? How can we keep our cup full? Here is a quick rundown of things you can do right now to get yourself pumped!

1. Movies – We all have a movie that after watching it we want to go out and do something. Do not waste that inspiration! Keep a good library of movies on hand so that when your cup is leaking, you can replenish your spirit. There are a ton of great inspirational movies, so go out and stock up on them. Movies are a very easy way of building positive energy without doing a lot of leg work.

2. Books – Reading a good book can put you on the right mental state to take action. Just like you should have a video library, you should also have a collection of books that you can cycle through to inspire yourself. You can read books along the lines of inspirational movies. Or you can also read books on how to develop your skills. Regardless, having a good set of books at your disposal will help keep your energy up high.

3. Great People and Things – Finally, the strongest source of inspiration one can attain is by observing greatness. If you know someone or something that inspires you, get yourself in contact with it as much as possible. Draw from it’s power so that you too can become great. Find ways of surrounding yourself with people or things that motivate you. Do not make it a chance occurrence to observe greatness – make it a daily experience. If you can do this, motivation will be a powerful and bountiful resource for you.

And remember, being inspired is just one step. Many people can get inspired. Using your inspiration to create action is a whole other story. When you are inspired, make it a point to take action on whatever is on your mind right at that moment. Make it a habit to find inspiration and immediately take action!

To eat or not to eat?

December 25, 2009

As an instructor of an all-female fitness program, advising people on healthy eating is an integral part of weight loss and maintenance of good health. Although this time of year sparks much joy and happiness for most, it can also wreak havoc on those trying to adopt healthier eating regimes. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas and the celebration of a new year – not to mention a potential birthday somewhere in the middle, how does one balance healthful eating with all the tempting treats and fun foods?

The answer is simple…MODERATION! What exactly does moderation mean when you are looking at a table laden with enough carbohydrates to fuel a football team? Well, instead of having seconds – be satisfied with one serving. Instead of eating 5 cookies, enjoy one. Instead of sampling every wine in the house, nurse a glass of your favorite brand.

Ok, so I won’t lie – although I’m not preaching total deprivation during the holidays, some discipline is still necessary, but then again, when is it not when you are in pursuit of a goal? If life and every aspect of it was so simple, where would the challenge lie in setting a life-improving objective and working to make it a reality?

Either way, good advice is only useful if and when the recipient is willing. Therein lies the logic behind the age-old adage, “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. If you want something badly enough, you will find the means to have it! So ladies, think about it…would you prefer a momentary spike of endorphins from that Christmas sugar rush (followed by emotions of guilt and regret), or a lifelong feeling of intense satisfaction knowing that you have enough discipline to control your actions and be that person you strive to be?

To eat or not to eat…that is the question!

Merry Christmas Eve Everyone!

December 24, 2009

Today is Christmas Eve and I want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! Enjoy the night with your family and friends – and enjoy the rest. Today I did some MMA training in the morning, finished up a little bit of shopping, and now I’m resting with my super pregnant wife :) I rented a few movies and am going to spend a private Christmas Eve with my wife and family.

Take today as a great opportunity to pull up your old rolodex of phone numbers and give a call to some of your old buddies and family members and wish them a merry Christmas. Sometimes you lose track of some of your friends. Also, even with your friends that you do keep in contact with, it means a lot to people to be remembered during Holidays. It is easy and a good time to do.

Ok everyone, have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and I’ll write to you tomorrow!

Going Through Uncomfortable Periods of Time

December 23, 2009

I’m not an old guy, I’m 29 years old, but I’ve already observed a few things about life. One of the things I’ve come to realize is that there will be MANY moments in life where one will have to go through some serious discomfort and awkwardness.

I’ve noticed two things… that every time I suck it up and push through the uncomfortable moments, I usually end up with a big reward and glad that I went through it… and the second thing I’ve noticed is that there are people who spend their entire life AVOIDING such moments…

For those who avoid such moments, they are missing out on all sorts of opportunities. Furthermore, quite often, by going through such moments, one learns a lot – and usually from something that seems totally unexpected from the experience.

I think it is Brian Tracy who talks about putting yourself in as many uncomfortable and awkward situations as possible… because the more often you are exposed to such situations… the more desensitized you become… with time you won’t feel ANY awkwardness. That is why it is said that going through these situations will build CHARACTER.

I used to be one of those who avoided all awkward and uncomfortable situations… these days I do everything possible to throw myself into these situations! The more awkward the conversation or situation, the more I force myself into it. And YES, I ALWAYS come out thankful that I did it, I do ALWAYS learn something from said situations, and I would like to think that it has added me some character :) Furthermore, it does get easier and easier each time.

Besides all these benefits, if that isn’t enough to motivate you to engage in that awkward conversation or to go through that embarrassing rehab program… then stayed focus on the final outcome of going through it… focus on the RESULTS. Then as you finish going through the experience, not only you will you gain those results, but ALSO the added benefits of what I just wrote about.

At the end of the day, with most awkward and uncomfortable processes and situations, most of the time, you have nothing to lose by going through these situations… except the feeling of being uncomfortable. As strong men and women, such feelings should NEVER stop us from accomplishing what needs to be done… or at least never stop us from TRYING.

This wasn’t written with the intention of being a MMA related topic… but it definitely can be. If you are going to enter a hard mixed martial arts practice, don’t think about how sick or tough it is going to be… focus more on the outcome, the result! And one thing is a guarantee with training – the harder (and more uncomfortable) the practice, the stronger you will come out of it physically and mentally. And will tough MMA practices build you character… you bet!

Ok everyone, have an awesome Christmas and have a SUPER FANTASTIC new year! I hope 2010 will be the best year of your life.
