In order to be successful in the martial arts (or in life) on the long-run, you need discipline. Notice that I said “long-run”. Sometimes life will deal you a great set of cards and you will have good fortune fall on your lap. But unfortunately, no matter how good a luck streak you are having, it will eventually come to an end… and it is at that point that only through knowledge and DISCIPLINE will you come out on top.
Think of all the people who got “rich quick”, such as certain actors, musicians, athletes, lotto winners, etc. who end up being dead broke. Once the luck well ran dry, they were too reckless and weren’t able to follow any discipline and spent away their fortunes.
Now for the majority of us, we won’t even have that head start of getting “rich quick” or having our goals within arms reach…
Now, for all of us, our goals are definitely reachable, but it is usually going to take some dirty work, some elbow grease, and definitely discipline.
Most of you know what needs to be done… but for some reason aren’t doing it. For example, I made this blog, www.TeamFFA.com, because I knew that having a blog with daily news, articles, etc. would be great for students and potential students to read. Furthermore, having all these fresh articles would also help out with search engines finding this website – hence finding FFA… so why hasn’t there been an update on this blog since May 14, 2009???????
Because of a lack of DISCIPLINE! That is why I went ahead and entered a pact with Master Lloyd Irvin. The pact is that I must update my blog EVERYDAY by 12AM……… or else I have to pay him a penalty of $2,500!!!!
Yup! That is the truth. And he is serious, because last time we did a similar challenge with submitting monthly websites, and one month he didn’t submit them in time and he paid up $2,500! So this stuff is for real… and as a result…
BAM! Here is my first blog post in over 6 months!
My point? Well, there are MANY ways to peel a potato, and there are also many ways to develop discipline. Here, in this instance, I’m using three principles:
1) A support group. It isn’t just Master Lloyd, it is also two other gentlemen in the group that engaged into this pact, and we constantly keep in touch and motivate each other via emails and phone calls. We all have a common goal that we are striving for and when one is lazy, the other picks him up, and vice-versa.
2) A penalty system. Master Lloyd Irvin is known for utilizing a “gun to the head” philosophy with work and projects, which is why he gets SO MUCH DONE. Whenever a project comes up, he visualizes that someone has a gun to his wife’s and kid’s head, and will PULL THE TRIGGER if you don’t finish the project today! Just think of how much you could get done in 24 hours if you REALLY HAD TO…. That is why certain people get more done in a day than 97% of the population gets done in a month. Well, the gun to the head philosophy works if you can really visualize and feel it – but otherwise, having a money penalty system, like the one I’m in, is enough to get the same adrenaline and feeling of “have to get this done” into your system. Like I felt a drive to get myself to a computer to get this done – and at 6:30PM, not at the last second either! When someone has a gun to your head (or a $2,500 penalty) you are definitely not going to procrastinate! You will want to get this done with ASAP – which is the goal.
3) Attacking with base hits rather than homeruns. A lot of people will hear a motivational speech (like this one) and get pumped up, make a list, and try to tackle a whole bunch of stuff at once… fail… and then drop the whole idea of discipline. It is the baseball team that only goes for homeruns versus the team that focuses on getting base hits… which team is going to consistently win more? Exactly, the team that focuses on just getting on base, after a few times at bat, the bases will be loaded and the points will start pouring in. Baby steps. Well, discipline is the same way. Discipline is a like a muscle, the more you work it out, the stronger it gets. If you were to go to the gym after NEVER having worked out, and go crazy maxing out on all the weights, machines, etc., you will go home and won’t be able to move or walk the next day! But if you do a little bit today, then a little more tomorrow, etc., you will eventually be able to life BIG weight. Same principle here, one blog post a day isn’t a big deal (it isn’t 10 blog posts a day). But over time, like a year, this will become easy and be like clockwork – then I’ll be ready to add MORE!
This principle of discipline is not just for internet marketing – it applies to every aspect of your life. The more discipline you have, the better you will be in mixed martial arts (MMA), the healthier you will be (proper diet, exercise, etc.), the smarter individual you will be (daily reading, writing, etc.), the better family person you will be, etc. You will be all around better.
So here is my contribution! Two birds with one stone – I’m building my discipline and helping you out with it as well! :) Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did sharing it.
