Should I Train Tonight at 8:30PM?

November 30, 2009

Of course I should! Monday nights at 8:30PM is one of the best classes of the week – Wrestling under Coach Mike Rio!

Who is Mike Rio?

Mike Rio is one of the best wrestlers to come out of Florida – he is a 2-time Florida State Champion and a 3-time Collegiate Wrestling National Champion! On top of his amazing wrestling credentials, he has also won several NAGA submission wrestling (no-gi BJJ) titles and is currently undefeated in pro MMA with a record of 3-0!

What’s crazy is that Coach Mike is an even better instructor! He has passed our intensive 10-week Level 1 Instructor Course and, along with our teaching certifications, has been coaching wrestling for years prior.

So YES, I should definitely train in the CAP Wrestling class tonight at 8:30PM…….. AND SO SHOULD YOU!!!!

So if you are a CAP member of our gym, head down tonight, and bring your running shoes. On Mondays, we meet in the rear parking lot and do a run to get things started. See you there!

What Do You Have Control Over?

November 29, 2009

I tell my fighters this all the time… that when going into a fight, to focus on only one thing… the amount of EFFORT they give… because in reality, this is the ONLY thing a fighter has control over in a fight.

You do NOT have control over if you win or lose… sometimes it just isn’t in the cards. Sometimes your opponent is far more technically and physically superior, sometimes the judges are unfairly biased, sometimes the referee makes many unfair calls, and then there is just plain bad luck – when a punch catches you on the sweet spot or you slip and fall, etc.

So what is the only thing you can truly ask of yourself? If you don’t have control over the outcome or many of the circumstances in the fight, what do you have control over? Your effort. How hard do you really go out there.

I think the magical and mystical mark is to go 100%. But really, how many things have you done with “100%” of your effort? Have you done something and said, “I did this at the truly best I could – I couldn’t have worked a little bit harder, faster, or more efficiently…”

That is the real goal – to give it 100%… not 95%, not 98%, not even 99.9%… but 100%!

I’m making this post because my fighter Shah Bobonis lost yesterday by decision – but the man gave it a HELL of an EFFORT. He gave it everything he had out there. Well, maybe not 100%, but pretty damn close – close enough to earn MY RESPECT as a man and as a fighter. I am a very proud of Shah. Like I told him after the fight, he gave me the only thing he could give me going into the fight. I couldn’t ask him to become an olympic level wrestler 10 minutes before the fight… or an world champ boxer… but the only thing I could ask was for him to give me his maximum effort – and that he did.

It really isn’t as easy as it sounds to give it everything you got.

Now that got me thinking… what we really need to focus on is giving such an effort everyday. Now I understand that most of us may burn out if we pushed such a hard pace on a day to day basis (or even for an entire day)… but what about 1 hour every day? I’m thinking about designating an hour everyday to giving it 100%! Perhaps I’ll dedicate that hour to writing, or to training, or to teaching… but I want to “call out” my 100% hour everyday and then rate my effort afterward. Once I get used to giving it 100% for an hour a day, then I’ll step it up.

Understand though, for this one hour, I want to work like if someone had a gun to my wife’s head and was going to pull the trigger if I didn’t do this hour job better than anyone else in the world.

This is just something I was thinking of today, hope you guys like it.

Everyone is telling me, “The Push Up Challenge is TOO EASY…”

November 28, 2009

And I AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!

But then comes the million dollar question…. ARE YOU DOING IT RIGHT NOW? I know I’m not!

There is a statistic that says that when a good idea is presented to someone, that if they agree that the idea is good, only 3% of the population would act on it!

But isn’t that true? Wouldn’t you agree that it would be great to do 40 push-ups a night? That would come out to 1,200 push-ups a month! We can all agree that the physical benefits would be great – but equally beneficially is the discipline required and the psychologically commitment you are making to your health.

So why aren’t we doing it? That is what this challenge is about, it’s about helping us develop the discipline required to do all these great “easy” things we hear about on a daily basis.

Then, there is a secret part about this benefit, which is that along with the discipline being developed to do push-ups everyday… you will also develop the habit of uploading video everyday. Once you finish this 30 day challenge, you will have an itch to continue uploading video because you have been doing it 30 days in a row! It is at that point where we can change what is being uploaded and continue feeding that healthy habit. I have been uploading one video a day for the past two months or so. All these videos are out there being watched by hundreds of thousands of people. I have over 950,000 views so far… hopefully I can reach the 1 million view mark before the end of the year (that is one of my goals).

So far I have three people who submitted their names, we got Florence Mangual, Raul Perez, and Malik Lewis. Let’s keep the names coming. I may add more people to the challenge if we have many names (I hate to keep people out!) or I may create another challenge to get them into.

The Push-Up Challenge!!!

November 27, 2009

I want to interact with my guys and girls on here and make REAL changes and improvements to our lives.

I’ve been thinking, the best thing I’ve been doing right now is my mastermind penalty system. It gets things done. Right now I’m in another country and I went through the biggest mission to find my internet access just so that I can make this post. And now, as a result of that discipline, I am going to end up spreading the same discipline with other people.

How?

The push-up challenge. For the challenge, I have a few requirements:

1) You must have the ability to film and upload to facebook on a daily basis.
2) You must be able to write out a $50 check
3) You must be serious (I’m only going to do this with 2 people).

This is how the challenge is going to work… first thing is first, you’re going to mail me a $50 check written out to me. In the memo put, “Push-Up Challenge”.

The way this is going to work is that I’m going to post a video of myself everyday doing two sets of 20 push-ups in front of today’s newspaper and have it up on MarcosAvellanFans.com. I want this to be a 30 Day Challenge. After 30 Days, I will discuss with these two people if they want to up it, maintain it, or change the challenge all together. If you can’t do two sets of 20, you can split it up into as many sets as you want.

If a video is not submitted by 12AM with a copy of the newspaper, I will deposit the check. If you meet the requirement for 30 Days, I’ll mail you the check back plus a free gift for accepting the challenge – plus you will have developed a new healthy habit (remember, it takes 21 days to develop a new habit).

IF I FAIL TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS, I will write each person a check for $1,000.

Who wants to jump in? Comment on here and I will pick the two best candidates, with priority being given to whoever posts first.

P.S. If you are serious but don’t have a camera – go to Best Buy and buy a “Flip” camera right now – this is super easy and goes straight into your computer.

P.P.S. After selecting who I’m picking, I will let the candidates know when we will begin.

UPDATE
You don’t have to have a newspaper, just visit www.CNN.com and click on today’s story, then film the story from your camera to verify the date.

Happy Thanksgiving! What am I Thankful For?

November 26, 2009

Everyday I keep a journal at http://www.FFAspace.com . In this journal, I write down the Anthony Robbins morning and evening questions. In the morning questions, one of them is to ask, “What am I most grateful for today?”

Why is it helpful and important to ask this question? Because as humans we tend to take the good things in our life for granted. It is like when you put on a cologne, after a few minutes, you won’t even notice it.

However, the bad things that happen…. damn… those things seem to stick out like a sore thumb. So although you could be stacking all sorts of accomplishments into your day, one bad thing can distract you from the fact that you had an amazing day. By stopping to give thanks for all the great things that have happened to you on a day to day basis, you will not only be impressed by your good fortunes, but you will also feel great – and that is why life is about, about being happy and feeling great.

I am most thankful today for my mother, father, brother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, my beautiful wife, and my baby Amira that will be born in two months. I am thankful for my friends and family at FFA, all my staff (they are the best). I am thankful for my mastermind group, I am thankful for my health (it is great to be healthy and active), I am extremely thankful for my current level of motivation, inspiration, and education.

I feel freakin’ super fantastic! Thank you all!

The Difference Between 95% and 100% is NOT 5%…

November 25, 2009

Hey guys and girls! I’m here to talk about the difference between 95% and 100%…

Now before all you math guys start telling me that the difference is 5% – wait a second and hear me out… because I’m talking about the difference between FINISHING a task 95% and 100%.

For some reason, us humans can ALL get to finishing that 95% relatively well… it is that last 5% which can take almost forever (or actually sometimes NEVER) to get done. Most people I know take LONGER to finish that last 5% of the task versus the first 95%! How can that be?

Because we all have an inner procrastinator that wants to put everything off – and it takes discipline and technique to sprint through that last 5% with the same pace that you did the first 95%.

Go ahead and make a list of all the things you have done 95%… you will be surprised, I’m sure you have quite a few things… and then TAKE THEM DOWN! :)

I got this concept from Brian Tracy’s audible series called “Goals” and it has really inspired me.

P.S. Make it a mission to have NOTHING done at 95%… it is 100% or nothing! :)

The Importance of Discipline (not just for MMA)

November 24, 2009

In order to be successful in the martial arts (or in life) on the long-run, you need discipline. Notice that I said “long-run”. Sometimes life will deal you a great set of cards and you will have good fortune fall on your lap. But unfortunately, no matter how good a luck streak you are having, it will eventually come to an end… and it is at that point that only through knowledge and DISCIPLINE will you come out on top.

Think of all the people who got “rich quick”, such as certain actors, musicians, athletes, lotto winners, etc. who end up being dead broke. Once the luck well ran dry, they were too reckless and weren’t able to follow any discipline and spent away their fortunes.

Now for the majority of us, we won’t even have that head start of getting “rich quick” or having our goals within arms reach…

Now, for all of us, our goals are definitely reachable, but it is usually going to take some dirty work, some elbow grease, and definitely discipline.

Most of you know what needs to be done… but for some reason aren’t doing it. For example, I made this blog, www.TeamFFA.com, because I knew that having a blog with daily news, articles, etc. would be great for students and potential students to read. Furthermore, having all these fresh articles would also help out with search engines finding this website – hence finding FFA… so why hasn’t there been an update on this blog since May 14, 2009???????

Because of a lack of DISCIPLINE! That is why I went ahead and entered a pact with Master Lloyd Irvin. The pact is that I must update my blog EVERYDAY by 12AM……… or else I have to pay him a penalty of $2,500!!!!

Yup! That is the truth. And he is serious, because last time we did a similar challenge with submitting monthly websites, and one month he didn’t submit them in time and he paid up $2,500! So this stuff is for real… and as a result…

BAM! Here is my first blog post in over 6 months!

My point? Well, there are MANY ways to peel a potato, and there are also many ways to develop discipline. Here, in this instance, I’m using three principles:

1) A support group. It isn’t just Master Lloyd, it is also two other gentlemen in the group that engaged into this pact, and we constantly keep in touch and motivate each other via emails and phone calls. We all have a common goal that we are striving for and when one is lazy, the other picks him up, and vice-versa.

2) A penalty system. Master Lloyd Irvin is known for utilizing a “gun to the head” philosophy with work and projects, which is why he gets SO MUCH DONE. Whenever a project comes up, he visualizes that someone has a gun to his wife’s and kid’s head, and will PULL THE TRIGGER if you don’t finish the project today! Just think of how much you could get done in 24 hours if you REALLY HAD TO…. That is why certain people get more done in a day than 97% of the population gets done in a month. Well, the gun to the head philosophy works if you can really visualize and feel it – but otherwise, having a money penalty system, like the one I’m in, is enough to get the same adrenaline and feeling of “have to get this done” into your system. Like I felt a drive to get myself to a computer to get this done – and at 6:30PM, not at the last second either! When someone has a gun to your head (or a $2,500 penalty) you are definitely not going to procrastinate! You will want to get this done with ASAP – which is the goal.

3) Attacking with base hits rather than homeruns. A lot of people will hear a motivational speech (like this one) and get pumped up, make a list, and try to tackle a whole bunch of stuff at once… fail… and then drop the whole idea of discipline. It is the baseball team that only goes for homeruns versus the team that focuses on getting base hits… which team is going to consistently win more? Exactly, the team that focuses on just getting on base, after a few times at bat, the bases will be loaded and the points will start pouring in. Baby steps. Well, discipline is the same way. Discipline is a like a muscle, the more you work it out, the stronger it gets. If you were to go to the gym after NEVER having worked out, and go crazy maxing out on all the weights, machines, etc., you will go home and won’t be able to move or walk the next day! But if you do a little bit today, then a little more tomorrow, etc., you will eventually be able to life BIG weight. Same principle here, one blog post a day isn’t a big deal (it isn’t 10 blog posts a day). But over time, like a year, this will become easy and be like clockwork – then I’ll be ready to add MORE!

This principle of discipline is not just for internet marketing – it applies to every aspect of your life. The more discipline you have, the better you will be in mixed martial arts (MMA), the healthier you will be (proper diet, exercise, etc.), the smarter individual you will be (daily reading, writing, etc.), the better family person you will be, etc. You will be all around better.

So here is my contribution! Two birds with one stone – I’m building my discipline and helping you out with it as well! :) Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did sharing it.
