FFA Fight Results – We Go 4-1!

July 22, 2008
Big congrats to the FFA fighters!  This past two weekends we have had five people fight and do excellent!

First up, two weekends ago, we had two fighters make their kickboxing debuts!  We had Danny Chavez (Miami Gym) and Cesar Serge (Davie Gym) both make their debuts… and win!  Danny did excellent in his fight, dominating all 3 rounds of action and scoring the unanimous decision.  He did some awesome!  He came in very disciplined and used sharp technique, scoring several huge punches, kicks, and knees.  Right after Danny, came Cesar.  Cesar fought a tough fight that we won by split decision.  It was a real war!  Cesar came out a bit tenative in the first round and lost the round – but we storm back in the second round and win that round.  Then in the final round, him and his opponent went to war – and Cesar won by using the trademarked FFA guts to take the victory!

Then last weekend, we had three fighters fight MMA:  Michael Bernhard, Tulio Quintanilla, and Shah Bobonis.  Michael Bernhard and Tulio were fighting in Destin, Florida while Shah was fighting in North Carolina.

Michael Bernhard was doing awesome – clinching with up his opponent, taking him to the cage, then scoring a big takedown!  Afterwards Mike landed several big shots from inside his opponent’s guard and, in a scramble, jumped to mount.  From the mount, Mike landed more big shots.  However, while mounted on his opponent, Mike was accidently poked in the eye.  The poke was so bad that Mike lost balance and sat on his butt, not being to see.  His opponent seized the opportunity and landed a barrage of punches on a blinded Mike.  Mike stuck it out until the end of the round but during the break, the doctor stopped the fight.  Mike was seeing triple and couldn’t tell the doctor how many fingers he had up.  It is a tough way to lose a fight but Mike was doing amazing and we are hoping to setup a rematch.  The Florida Boxing Commission is reviewing the tape and may declare the bout a no-contest.

Tulio Quintanilla… what can we say about Tulio?!  Tulio’s fight was, in my opinion, the biggest display of heart ever shown by a FFA fighter in the cage!  The fight was definitely the best fight of the night!  The 1st round was ALL Tulio!  He came out and dropped his opponent with the very first strike thrown – a devastating leg kick!  With his opening leg kick, his opponent was dropped.  Then Tulio connected with all sorts of amazing kickboxing combos.  He scored a flying knee, a kick to the head, an assortment of leg kicks, punch combos… and even dropped his opponent with a left hook to the head!  However, his opponent was tough as hell and took everything Tulio gave.  In the 2nd round, his opponent rallied back and dropped Tulio!  Then Tulio found himself on the defensive and was dropped two more times!  The referee almost stopped the fight on several occasions – it was very scary!  When the bell rang, Tulio stumbled back to the stool.  In the 3rd round, Tulio scored a takedown and took the fight to the ground.  On the ground, he was reversed but was able to sink a perfect triangle choke!  However, he couldn’t get his opponent to tap!  The guy was VERY tough and stayed in the triangle until the end of the round – about 4 minutes!  Tulio applied two armbars and landed many elbows – but at the end he had to settle for a hard fought unanimous decision.  Both fighters left the cage bloodied and both ended up in the hospital.  Both guys are fine – I will later post up a picture of both men posing with their war-torn faces together in the hospital.  Awesome fight, congrats Tulio – who is now 3-0!

Last fighter was Shah “Show Stoppa” Bobonis.  Shah was fighting a tough fighter with some experience.  His opponent was an expert wrestler and BJJ purple belt.  Shah was able to keep the fight standing and win the first two round with nice boxing – moving in and out and landing clean combos.  All the while he did a great job stopping the takedown and even landed takedowns of his own.  In the 3rd round, his opponent was able to take Shah to the mat and take his back!  It was a scary moment, but Shah was able to defend and escape the position, winning the fight by unanimous decision and improving his record to 4-1!  Great job Shah!

I will try to post some pics soon, in the meantime give your fighters a big congrats when you see them at the gym!

Sincerely,
Coach Marcos Avellan

NAGA RESULTS!

July 22, 2008
Hey Everyone, this is Victor Raphel.

First I would like to congratulate every single one of you who competed in the 2008 International NAGA grappling competition. It takes guts and a special type of person to step on a mat and compete against someone who wants to physically hurt you. This sport is not meant for the weak and that is what we teach at FFA, to have no fear no matter who the opponent is. At this NAGA we had one of the best results we have ever had. I am truly proud of how we united as a team.We really got that FFA pride going and it helped us gain that second place trophy out of over 100 teams. We were not just representing ourselves but the family name and our school which we love and hold dear. But this is just the beggining of our legacy. I know in my heart by next NAGA we will take home the overall first place trophy and celebrate our victory. God Bless you all and see you training soon. Love you guys. I got some of the pics of from the results from the NAGA website but I got all the results for you right here.

P.S. I wanted to congratulate a special person. This person truly showed FFA spirit by going against one of the top grapplers in the U.S. today and gave a 100%. No one had the guts to compete except our team mate. This NAGA the FFA Outstanding Grappler Award goes to Melissa Rivera. Congratulations. Well deserved.

FIGHTER TRY-OUTS POSTPONED TO SUNDAY, AUGUST 3

July 22, 2008
The FFA Pro-Fighter Try-Outs have been postponed one week, to take place Sunday, August 3, at 2:00PM at the FFA Miami location.  If you goal is to fight MMA or Kickboxing for FFA, whether it be at the amateur or professional level, then you must join the FFA Fight Team!

Video of the last try-outs:

The FFA Fight Team has its own practices twice a day, from 9:00am to 11:00am and from 4:30pm to 6:15pm – as well as unlimited training throughout our other CAP classes.  As part of the Fight Team, you would be training with the rest of the FFA team… which went undefeated in 2006 and scored 20 wins (18 of the wins ending by KO or Sub) in 2007 – with only 4 fighters losing!

Along with the training, as part of the team, Coach David Avellan would be working as your manager, setting you up with fights and sponsorship.

To be eligible for the Try-Outs, you must have at least six months of training in the Combat Athlete Program (formerly BBC) and must be willing to train at least five times a week.  If you are a white belt, it is going to be near impossible to make the team but if you have at least six months of training, you are welcomed to try.  Last time not a single white belt made the team.  Also, please come in shape, it is going to be tough!

If you meet the requirements and want to participate, you must send an email with your full name and phone number to Info@FFAgyms.com .  All requests must be sent by August 1st.  If you have any questions, feel free to send an email.

For those that are going, make sure to bring running shoes and full sparring gear.  If you do not come with those, you will be disqualified from the try-outs right away.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Sincerely,
Coach Marcos Avellan
