FFA Promotions this past weekend…

January 30, 2008

mixed-martial-arts.jpg

The Freestyle Fighting Academy celebrated its 6 year anniversay this past weekend with our Annual Awards Banquet. Once a year, we host an amazing banquet where we cover all our accomplishments of the year, promote students, give out awards, give out speeches, and finish off with a highlight video of the year and dancing!

This year was by far the biggest of the parties… with over 250 guests! On top of that, we had the largest set of promotions. But better than that… was the accomplishments!

Our pro MMA team went completely undefeated in 2006 and last year, 2007, although we did not go undefeated, we scored a milestone high 20 MMA victories! Of the 20 victories, 18 were by KO, TKO, or submission! That is an impressive 90% finish rate… with only four fighters suffering losses.

Overall, our competition team competed in 26 events in 2007 – with 17 of them being MMA events. That is an impressive rate of more than one event every two weeks! Since our gym’s creation in January 2002, our team has particpated in 134 events. Another highlight was our grappling team, which scored its first NAGA victory over local rivals American Top Team.

Even more outstanding, is the amount of promotions we had this year… 26! Last year we had 14.

The following were proudly promoted to FFA Blue Belt:
Omar Bembry
Cassidy Pepin
Ahmed Cure
Dylan Cure
Giovanni Moljo
Joe Ray
Cesar Jordan
Joshua Mercado
Lamberto Duarte
Troy Gray
Pablo Alfonso
Steve Trager
Danny Chavez
Dale Alderson
Kevin Perez
Victor Raphel
Joel Sanchez
Denis Hernandez
Richard Fernandez
David Lago
Adron Morrison
Jose Rivas

The following were proudly promoted to FFA Purple Belt:
Billy Barrow
Glenn Hernandez

And the highest promotion of the banquet, FFA Brown Belt, was given to:
Jorge “El Fantasma” Vigo

We also had a BJJ promotion:
BJJ Brown Belt (no-gi): Luis “Wicho” Rodriguez

On top of the promotions, we also had a set of awards given out:
Rookie of the Year = Joe Ray
Most Improved = Alexander de la Torre
Unsung Hero = Willie Davis
Most Dedicated = Efrain Ruiz
MVP = Michael “White Crane” Bernhard

Congratulations to all those promoted and to FFA!

Why Was Coach Efrain’s Fight Cancelled?

January 30, 2008

As many fighters know, the Florida Boxing Commission has a history of lacking logic at times… and this was one of those moments.  Efrain’s original opponent, Reggie Pena, dropped out at the last moment, two days before the fight was scheduled.  The day before the fight, a replacement fighter was found.  The brave man, who took a fight on one day notice, drove 14 HOURS from Georgia to take the fight…

However, there was some sort of deadline created by the commission that said he had to weigh-in by 1:00pm… the fighter arrived at 4:00pm… so they DID NOT ALLOW the fight to happen!

I’m guessing that this rule orginated to prevent people from weighing in at the last minute and making things difficult for the commission and promoters… but considering the circumstances, you would think that not only would the commission thank this fighter for driving down 14 HOURS but also be more flexible with their rules, considering he arrived hours before the start of the show.

Both guys weighed the same and were eager to fight – it was a disgrace the fight was not allowed to happen.  During arguments with the head of the Florida Boxing Commission, he threatened that he wants to “Ban MMA from Florida”.  This is one of MANY reasons a Florida MMA Commission needs to be established.

We had sold about 100 tickets to this event… and Coach Efrain feels bad about it.  We are going to announce a special seminar with all the FFA black belts for students who bought tickets to this event.  We will announce the date and time by this Friday on this website.  Thank you all for your SUPPORT and understanding.

ATTN Students: Music Shortage at FFA!

January 28, 2008

The title says it all… Our CDs have either gotten scratched up, missing, or played out :)  If you have any CDs you would like to donate, let us know.  The only thing is that we would prefer music without many curse words.  Thanks for your help!

The Votes are in… FFA is opening a NEW class!

January 23, 2008

We recently emailed everyone on our list and asked for everyone to vote on a time for a new class… and the votes were 90% for the same time… which is 4:00PM! :)

So on February 5th, we are opening up a NEW Introduction section on Tuesday & Thursday from 4:00pm to 5:15pm.  In three months, we will open up BBC sections on the other days.  If you are a current BBC member and would prefer to come to the 4:00pm class, speak with one of our program directors and it won’t be a problem.  For now BBC members can share the class with the Intro students and once the class picks up we will have a seperate BBC section.

If you are a current student and would like to switch, please let us know.

The Banquet is coming up this Sunday!

January 21, 2008

FFA is very excited to invite everbody to our SIX year anniversary celebration & Awards Banquet! The FFA Awards Banquet is a yearly tradition and this one also marks our six year anniversary! This is a HUGE milestone in our gym’s history!

Previously, we only allowed current students to take part in the annual banquet… but this time we are extending invitations to everyone! If you aren’t a student, this is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek into one of our most proud traditions. For non-students, if you are interested in joining our gym, it is a great way to see what sort of program you will be getting involved in – trust me, this is the most elegant and prestigious awards ceremony in the martial arts world!

And if you are a student, you should consider this a mandatory event – this is by far the most important event we have all year!  If you haven’t been to one before, ask a couple of veterans about this event, you really can’t miss out on this! You will leave the event with renewed motivation, more pride about your team, and with a full stomach :)

The banquet is being held on Sunday, January 27, at 6:00pm at the exquisite Signature Gardens in Miami. The address is 12725 SW 122 Avenue, Miami, FL. The Signature Gardens is known for hosting some of the most elegant social occasions.

The event is a formal event, so we ask all men to come in suit & tie and women with formal dress.

The banquet is special because it is the only time during the year that we hand out the promotions for our students. On top of the promotions, we also present special awards like the most dedicated, most improved, best fight, rookie of the year, M.V.P., etc. We also have a projector and show a power point presentation which goes over the history our gym, what we have accomplished in 2007, and our goals for 2008. 2007 was a special year because it is the first time our pro team MMA team had secured 20 wins in one year! And of the 20 wins, 18 of them were by KO, TKO, or Submission!  On top of the martial arts, the Women Only Bootcamp program will also be handing out awards and presenting surprises as well!

Then at the end of the banquet, after some speeches from students and instructors, we display on the projector a highlight reel from all the fights and competitions of the year. This year, we are hiring a DJ and ending the night with dancing! In past years, we couldn’t do this because of time constraints but we have solved that by separating the kids’ awards and giving them their own separate banquet! So the martial arts and women-only bootcamp will share the same banquet.

And on top of all the ceremony and speeches, we will also be served a FANTASTIC full course meal by the chefs of the Signature Gardens.

This event is a non-profit event. The fee to attend covers your plate and rental of the hall. The fee to attend is $28 for each adult and $20 for each child. Feel free to bring any friends or family.

Originally, we had a deadline of January 20… but we went ahead and purchased an extra 15 tickets so that we could sell them to anyone who may have not heard of the event or are simply procrastinators :)

To make your reservations, please email me at info@ffamiami.com with your full name and phone number so that one of our staff can call you back and reserve your spot. Thank you very much and we hope to see you there!

Pics from BBC Get-Together at Crandon Park!

January 21, 2008

On Saturday, Jan 19, FFA’s BBC members met up and had a great BBQ at Crandon Park!  This is part of a new monthly tradition.  It was really nice, we rented out a shelter, had BBQ, played football & soccer, and even hit up the beach!  Here is a group pic from the event.  Thanks to everyone that went and see you again next month!
